Clerkship Programme

No direct clerkship program. Graduate entry via APS Jobs Legal Stream (legal practice sub-stream), coordinated by Attorney-General's Department. Applications open March, close April each year. Eligibility: Australian citizen, LLB or JD completed within 5 years of application, admitted or willing to complete PLT. Program: 3 rotations across AGS practice groups + client outpost placement at a Commonwealth agency + 12-week pro bono placement (1 day/week). ~350 lawyers, offices in every capital city.

Pro Bono Program of the Year 2019 (Lawyers Weekly Australian Law Awards). Achieved 2024–25 National Pro Bono Target (19,082 hours against 17,640 target). Recognised as centre of excellence for government law by Attorney-General's Department.

Pro Bono & Community

19,082 pro bono hours accrued in 2024–25, exceeding National Pro Bono Target. Graduate placements with community legal centres and public interest organisations (Arts Law Centre of Australia, Canberra Community Law, Consumer Action Law Centre, Darwin Community Legal Service). Rolling 6-month placement: AGS lawyers temporarily relocate to Darwin for Darwin Community Legal Service. International legal assistance to government lawyers in Asia-Pacific. Signed up to Australian Pro Bono Centre Aspirational Target since 2008.
